It rains ____ on Saturn and Jupiter.
On planets like Saturn and Jupiter, the atmosphere is so extreme that it literally rains diamonds from the sky.
How it works:
- ⚡ Lightning storms turn methane gas into soot (carbon)
- 🌡️ As the soot falls, intense heat and pressure compress it into graphite
- 💎 Deep in the atmosphere, that graphite is squeezed into solid diamonds
Why it’s fascinating:
- 🌍 On Earth, diamonds are rare and deep underground, but there, they fall like hailstones
- 🔭 Scientists estimate that Saturn may produce about 1,000 tons of diamonds every year
Deep within these gas giants, there could even be literal "oceans" of liquid diamond.
